The Château Borély's collections reflect the Olympic Games and the sailing competitions to be held in Marseille's harbor, with a selection of swimwear for men, women and children, beachwear and sportswear, accessories and photographs from the post-war period to the present day.
Long an elitist pastime, the sea was democratized with the expansion of transport links, the introduction of paid vacations in 1936 and the development of water sports. Today, it attracts millions of bathers who sacrifice themselves to the rite of the beach, the scene of the latest "beachwear" trends.
From the unisex, functional leotards of the 30s and 40s to the "couture", sometimes offbeat creations of contemporary designers, the Le grand bain exhibition allows us to follow the evolution of society's mores and tastes through the history of swimwear - or how to properly (un)dress in the sun!
► To make sure you get the full tour of all our exhibition rooms, please contact the Museum before your visit.
► All tours and activities around the exhibition are available on musees.marseille.fr
