Orfeo - Claudio Monteverdi

Although Monteverdi's Orfeo was not the very first opera in Western music (others preceded it by several years), its first public performance in Mantua in 1607 was a founding date in the history of lyric theater, as were the premieres of Don Giovanni, Tristan and Isolde, Boris Godunov, Pelléas et Mélisande and Wozzeck.
