His name was Rey, and he called himself Reyer in homage to Wagner. Like his hero, the French composer was inspired by the Song of the Nibelungen to compose his opera Sigurd (Siegfried in Scandinavian), undertaken before the premiere of the Tetralogy.
Premiered at La Monnaie in Brussels in 1884, it tells the story of how Helda and Gunther send Sigurd to free Brünhilde, unaware that they will fall in love. Killed by Gunther, Sigurd ascends to heaven...
