After building the Saint-Nicolas citadel, Louis XIV ordered the modernization of the galley arsenal. In 1748, after the departure of the galley slaves to Toulon, the arsenal was disused and the slow decay of the buildings led to their demolition in the 1780s. Only one pavilion, at 23, cours d'Estienne-d'Orves, escaped destruction: it is occupied by the restaurant, bookstore, store, and Jeanne Laffitte publishing house.
