In the 13th century, the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem set up a fortress and a commandery at the entrance to the port.
The Tour Carrée was built by King René, Count of Provence, in the 15th century. The Fanal tower, built in 1644, signaled the entrance to the port. Louis XIV, in the 17th century, separated the fort from its neighborhood by digging a large trench, and thus kept the Marseillais in check by building the entrance to the port on the other side, Fort St. Nicolas.
The fort is an integral part of the MuCEM: its access will be reopened at the time of the museum's inauguration.
