The square is located at the top of the butte des Moulins, name due to the presence of windmills at the end of the 16th century.
The hill is approached via Place de Lenche, now a market and café square. Climbing up through Les Accoules, the Place des Moulins features two towers built into the houses, the last archaeological remains of the town's 15 windmills.
In the 19th century, the town had everything razed to the ground, giving this square the appearance of a village square. Underneath the square lies an ancient cistern, a veritable underground monument (closed to the public).
