Sainte-Marguerite district

Located in the 9th arrondissement of Marseille, the Sainte-Marguerite district is crossed by the Huveaune river and the Marseille canal. Its name comes from ‘Maris guadi iter’, which literally means ‘way of the ford of the sea’, according to the writer and historian Alfred Saurel. Parks and gardens in the Sainte-Marguerite district

Discover the Jardin de la Magalone  and its 1.4 hectares of lush greenery. It is home to a bastide house, a chapel, a classically inspired garden and some lovely statues. Every year, the bastide plays host to a variety of artists in the form of concerts and conferences. Bought by the city of Marseille in 1980, the Jardin de la Magalone is free and open to the public all year round. Just to the north of the district, you can also visit Parc Dromel, a small family park that’s ideal for taking a break from nature. At the eastern end of Sainte-Marguerite is the Parc de la Maison Blanche. This historic park is home to a lake, the town hall of the 9th and 10th arrondissements, several varieties of tree over 200 years old, a children’s play area and even artistic performances.

Near the Sainte-Marguerite district, you can go to the famous Avenue du Prado, Marseille’s famous avenue running through several arrondissements. Here you’ll find a wide range of clothing boutiques, craft shops, charming restaurants and cafés. Avenue Prado has its own shopping centre just a stone’s throw from the Stade Orange Vélodrome. We advise you to discover all the architectural beauties along the avenue, while taking advantage of the café terraces it provides.

Since 2014, a path has linked Sainte-Marguerite to the plage de l’Huveaune, running alongside the river. This 2.5 km pathway is a great way to enjoy family walks in the sunshine of Marseille. You can also cycle the whole way. Plage de l’Huveaune is in the 8th arrondissement, very close to the famous reproduction of the statue of David. In summer, this beach is particularly popular with tourists, with its supervised bathing and shallow waters ideal for families. In winter, surfers get out their boards to enjoy the few waves it has to offer.
