The Lodi district, nestling in Marseille’s 6th arrondissement, is steeped in a rich history that gives it its unique charm. Its name has its origins in the famous Battle of Lodi, which took place in Italy in 1796 during the Napoleonic Wars. Rue de Lodi, the district’s main thoroughfare, bears witness to this glorious history through its majestic period buildings. But the Lodi district is not limited to its past heritage, it also embraces modernity with the Tour Méditerranée. The Cours Gouffé is in the Lodi district. It once belonged to the Gouffé family, including Bernard Gouffé de Lacour, former director of Marseille’s botanical gardens. In the 19th century, Cours Gouffé was mainly inhabited by wealthy Egyptian families, including members of the Bonaparte army units. Some of the buildings in the area were constructed by the famous David brothers, on the corner of rue d’Austerlitz.

If you’re passing through this district, we recommend a stopover in the nearby Castellane district, particularly at the Basilique du Sacré Cœur, just a stone’s throw from Place Castellane.
