Saint-Pierre district

Located in Marseille’s 5th arrondissement, the Saint-Pierre district is home to part of the city’s largest cemetery (the Saint-Pierre cemetery), as well as the entrance to the Timone hospital. This historic district owes its name to a chapel built in honour of the apostle Saint-Pierre in the 17th century, but this chapel has now disappeared. Discover this historic district of Marseille.

What to do in the Saint-Pierre district

Saint-Pierre is a fairly lively district, home to a number of hotels and restaurants, schools, a church and a wide range of shops. Overall, it’s a pleasant district with its own charm. Its main streets are rue Jean Martin, rue Louis Frangin, rue Saint-Pierre, boulevard Chave and boulevard Sakakini.

Rue Saint-Pierre is the longest street in Marseille (3400 metres long). It crosses the 5th, 6th, 10th, 11th and 12th arrondissements. The most daring will have the courage to cross it and explore it from side to side, admiring all the old buildings along the way.

You can visit Saint-Pierre church all year round. Built in 1858 in a neo-Romanesque style, discover its architectural beauty. Saint-Pierre church is a major part of the cultural heritage of the Marseilles district. It stands right next to the Saint-Pierre cemetery, established in 1855. Today, the Saint-Pierre cemetery is one of the largest in the region.

Cristal Limiñana, the benchmark for pastis in Marseille

Cristal Limiñana, a veritable institution rooted in the Saint-Pierre district since it was founded in 1884 by the Limiñana brothers, is an indisputable pillar of Marseille’s heritage. Since 1962, their factory has been located in the heart of Marseille, precisely on the site where Manuel Limiñana wisely acquired the Mediterranean distillery and the Saint-Jean-du-Désert earthenware factory. This historical heritage is reflected in every drop of their exquisite creations.

The Cristal Anis, like an emblematic star, is always at the top of their creations. Unmistakable thanks to its hexagonal bottle and parchment-like orange label, this precious nectar has been delighting the senses and seducing palates for generations. Its distinctive, refined taste makes it the drink of choice for many connoisseurs. However, Cristal Limiñana doesn’t stop there, offering a diverse range of drinks, each carefully bottled in the famous hexagonal bottle that has become the company’s emblem.

Tours of the factory are available in several languages (French, English, Spanish, Portuguese), to discover the adventure of the Limiñana family and the different secrets of anisette and pastis.
