The land leased by the City of Marseille offered an exceptional site, between sea and hills, for the fledgling races, which were immediately very popular. The Cercle des Moutards, which later became the Cercle des Phocéens, founded at the end of the 18th century and still active today, supported racing in Marseille from the outset, financing races by granting subsidies.
Events that have written and marked Marseille's history: the first Tour de France in 1903, the first Marseille airshow in 1910, motor racing from 1949 onwards.
