What to do during your stay in Marseille?

France’s second-largest city is world-famous, and Marseille is one of the most emblematic cities in the south of France. And with good reason, the Phocaean city is home to a unique cultural heritage in its historic districts, where a warm atmosphere reigns.

One of Marseille’s most emblematic landmarks is the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, nicknamed the ‘Good Mother’. Overlooking the city, it is a must-see at least once in your life.

Discover Marseille’s iconic Vieux-Port. Renowned for its many restaurants and tourist attractions, come and see the masts and boats as you stroll around in the beautiful Mediterranean sunshine. For the ultimate in cultural visits, check out all the city’s iconic sites and monuments, including the Château d’If, La Cathedrale de la Major, the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations and L’abbaye Saint-Victor.

Marseille is also home to a huge number of delicious restaurants serving local specialities, mainly fish and seafood. For total immersion, discover the best restaurants nestling on the seafront.

There’s plenty for youngsters too: concerts, matches at the Stade Orange Vélodrome, bars and discos, Marseille is a lively city with a joviality like nowhere else. The liveliest areas at night are the Plaine district and its many concert halls, the Vieux-Port and its countless restaurants and bars, the Escale Borély and its trendy bars by the sea, and the Cours Julien district.

And of course, Marseille is also popular for its sublime beaches close to the city centre, ideal for a family summer holiday.

The best beaches in the city

Marseille has more than 21 beaches and 6 different coves along its coastline. Each has its own charm to discover. Here are the most popular beaches, according to individual needs and characteristics.

Family beaches

One of the best beaches for families with young children is the famous Plage du Prophète. This beach has a gentle slope down into the water, allowing you to get your feet under you over a fairly long distance, making swimming easier for the little ones. Plage du Prophète is one of Marseille’s most popular beaches, offering a host of attractions including its proximity to the city centre, snack bars, refreshment stands, first-aid post, showers and toilets. Another family beach is Plage des Catalans. This pretty sandy beach also has a gentle slope and several snack bars offering ice creams and cold drinks. Close to the Old Port, it’s easy to get to. The Prado beaches are also very popular with tourists, thanks to their many attractions: play areas, adapted facilities, free lockers, amenities and close proximity to restaurants.

For the adventurous

The most adventurous will be seduced by Marseille’s small creeks and wild beaches. Some are a little difficult to access and are not recommended for children. Among the most perilous, but also the most picturesque, is the famous Anse de Malmousque. This little cove offers a breathtaking view of the Endoume archipelago. There’s no sandy beach here, just rocks and a concrete slab. But the view and the setting are well worth the diversions. Nestling in Marseille’s 7th arrondissement, Malmousque is a must-see in the Phocaean city. Known for its colourful houses and narrow streets, this is a place like no other. The Calanque de la Crine (nicknamed ‘Tahiti’s beach’), located on the Frioul archipelago (so you’ll need to take the shuttle to get there), is another excellent choice for its breathtaking scenery and crystal-clear waters. However, you should allow around 1 hour’s walk to reach it.

The most sumptuous

One of the most beautiful beaches on Marseille’s coastline is Sainte Croix beach, just a few kilometres from the centre of the city. Surrounded by rocky outcrops, this magnificent white sandy beach promises superb afternoons of swimming in an idyllic and peaceful setting. The Corbières beaches (including Plage de la Batterie, Plage de la Lave and Plage du Fortin) are also an excellent choice for a feast for the eyes. Tucked away in Marseille’s 16th arrondissement, you’ll enjoy uninterrupted views of the city’s harbours, as well as sumptuous beaches. Other must-see beaches include Anse de la Maronaise and the Calanque d’En-Vau.
