What is the carbon footprint?
The carbon footprint is an indicator that estimates the amount of greenhouse gases emitted to satisfy the consumption of an individual, a population or a company.
The calculation of the carbon footprint is based solely on man-made CO2 emissions and is measured in kilograms/tonne CO2 equivalent.
Why is the release of CO2 into the atmosphere a problem?
The more CO2 we release, the more it accumulates in the atmosphere and warms the earth.
Today, the average temperature has already risen by more than 1.2 degrees compared to the year 1900.
We must therefore do everything we can to limit the increase to well below 2°, and do our best to limit it to 1.5°.
Where does my carbon footprint come from when I travel?
One of the main causes of CO2 emissions in tourism is transport, particularly air transport, which accounts for 75% of total tourism C02 emissions. To reduce your carbon footprint, it is best to choose the train or bus whenever possible.
Why calculate your carbon footprint?
To know the personal value of your actions and to realise that a product/service has an impact on the environment throughout its life cycle.
- Production, harvesting/extraction of raw materials
- Product manufacturing
- Transport and logistics
- Distribution
- Product use
- End of life (waste management)
How to calculate your carbon footprint?
By visiting dedicated calculators. We recommend the one from ADEME (French Agency for Ecological Transition).
And to go further in the discovery of your carbon footprint, don’t hesitate to consult the various simulators on the ADEME website.
