The Rencontres Films Femmes Méditerranée (Mediterranean Women's Film Festival) was founded in Marseille in 2006, with the primary aim of discovering the work of women filmmakers from both shores of the Mediterranean. They are unique in Europe for their dual character: women's cinema and cinema from the South. A demanding, often disturbing cinema, with a remarkable energy that blends drama and comedy, intimacy and history in motion.
At our annual Rencontres cinématographiques, the films we present, in Marseille and in regional cinemas, are selected to enable audiences to discover the diversity and audacity of new female directors from some thirty countries, or to rediscover outstanding female directors, and to meet them during screenings, round-table discussions, film lessons, or retrospectives where they present their approach.
Since 2018, Films Femmes Méditerranée has provided special support for young Mediterranean filmmakers by organizing a professional day to help them produce their film. In this way, 8 to 10 female directors are selected following a call for projects broadcast across the Mediterranean basin and beyond.
All our screenings are free of charge for young people, students, the unemployed and those on minimum social benefits!
For the past seven years, we've been offering free screenings to audiences far removed from the cinema, and running image education workshops to facilitate exchanges with others, raise awareness of societal issues and open people's eyes to auteur cinema made by Mediterranean women.
