Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde

Notre-Dame de la Garde “La Bonne Mère”,an emblematic figure of the city, watches over sailors, fishermen and all Marseillais. This site offers a unique view of the city, the Old Port, the Panier district, the islands of Frioul and If, the north of Marseille, the beach districts and the hills that encircle Marseille.
The entire site is accessible. For people with reduced mobility or in wheelchairs, it is recommended to have a personal vehicle or to use a cab or even a adapted taxi.

Le Panier - Old town district

Behind the Hôtel de Ville lies the historic heart of the city known as “Le Panier”. The origin of the name is said to come from the sign of an inn “Le Logis du Panier”, set up in the 17th century.
It’s pleasant to stroll around this district with its atypical little streets and numerous artisan stores.
For people in chair, it’s best to be accompanied as some streets are very steep and the sidewalks are sometimes crowded. Beware, there are also sometimes a lot of stairs.
Tracé PMR (Personnes à Mobilité Réduite) : The Voie Historique is suggested on the city map, but we draw your attention to the streets and alleys of the old town which are sometimes very steep and the sidewalks narrow. Please do not hesitate to contact the Office de Tourisme et des Congrès for further information.

The Frioul archipelago

The larger Frioul islands are accessible, but it’s advisable to be accompanied.
On the Port, you can restore and relax. There are hiking trails, but they’re not easy to get to. L’île d’If and the Château d’If, meanwhile, are not accessible. Concerning access, sea transport from the Vieux Port to Port Frioul is provided by “le bateau”.

La Corniche

The Corniche Kennedy is a seaside promenade linking the city center to the Prado Sud Beaches (5 km long).
The sidewalks are wide except on the “Malmousque” portion where they are narrow and crowded.

La Cité Radieuse - Le Corbusier

It is the work of architect Le Corbusier. Built between 1947 and 1951, it is an imposing construction evoking the theme of an urban liner anchored in a park. The top level houses a nursery school and gymnasium. Finally, the roof terrace offers a sheltered stage for open-air shows. The common areas are accessible and the roof terrace partially accessible. Beware of the rather high step (+/- 10 cm).

Parc Borély

This 17-hectare garden is home to an 18th-century bastide, enhanced by a 19th-century “formal” garden and landscaped park. This Bastide, the Château Borély, today houses the Musée des Arts décoratifs et de la mode. The Parc Borély as well as the Botanical Garden located in the park are accessible to wheelchair users. We recommend that you contact them before your visit.

Port Antique - Jardin des Vestiges, Marseille History Museum

The Port Antique site (named Jardin des vestiges when it opened to the public in 1983) presents the results of the first major urban archaeological excavations carried out in France. The remains, revealed in 1967 on the construction site of the Centre Bourse, are major historical witnesses. The site is structured around the Roman road, the Greek ramparts and near the Ancient Port, where the world’s largest visible shipwreck was discovered.
This Roman road, lined with funerary monuments, enters the city through a monumental entrance. The entrance is via the Musée d’Histoire, inside the Centre Bourse.
