"In the footsteps of Mary Magdalene" route

In partnership with the Regional Tourist Board, the Tourist office of Marseille has contributed to the creation of the “In the footsteps of Mary Magdalene” trail. This 10-stage, 222-kilometer hike makes a stopover in Marseille, taking in L’Estaque, Les Aygalades, Saint-Victor Abbey and Notre-Dame de la Garde.

A journey in 10 stages

This route takes in the southern region from Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-mer to Saint-Maximin, passing through some magnificent places steeped in history. Indeed, Provencal tradition has it that Mary Magdalene, Martha, Lazarus and their companions, driven out by persecution of the Jews and forced into exile, arrived by boat at Sainte-Marie-de-la-mer, then found refuge in the grotto of the Sainte-Baume. Today, the patron saint is still celebrated in Provence, particularly in the various places along the route:

  • Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-mer
  • Salin-de-Giraud
  • Fos-sur-mer
  • Martigues
  • Carry-le-rouet
  • L’Estaque
  • Marseille
  • Gémenos
  • Plan d’Aups
  • Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume

Marseille is an important stop on the route, representing 3 major stages: from Carry-le-Rouet to Marseille l’Estaque / From Marseille l’Estaque to Marseille centre-ville / From Marseille center to Marseille la Barasse.
